THE POWER OF GMS® IN SANTA CATARINADEFOREST, WISCONSIN – January 18, 2008 – Nine individuals attended the Genetic Management System® (GMS) school held December 10-13 in Santa Catarina, Brazil. This was the first GMS school held in Santa Catarina, and it was led by ABS Pecplan Representative Francisco “Chico” Vanelli. In addition to the classroom training on developing and implementing a genetic business plan utilizing GMS, the group also visited several successful GMS herds. “The Santa Catarina area has recently been developing and expanding,” stated Vanelli. “It currently represents one of the top milk production areas and is projected to be one of the largest dairy regions in South America in upcoming years.” “Chico has worked hard to inform dairy producers about GMS and has aided in making it a dominant, well-respected program in Santa Catarina,” stated Amy Knuth, ABS Global GMS Manager. “We look forward to the continued growth of the GMS program in this area through the addition of new customers and the training of new GMS consultants.” During the classroom training sessions, the group discussed important topics such as features and benefits of GMS, needs of the customer, GMS mating process, sire selection, inbreeding, computer tools and selling experiences. Afterwards, participants visited two ABS GMS dairies for cow coding exercises to certify their evaluation skills understanding linear traits and the differences among cows.
Luciano Sarvacinski has been utilizing GMS for the past eight years and uses 100% ABS sires for service. Fernando Sarvacinski, Luciano’s son, stated, “GMS brought value to our herd with increased milk production, uniformity and an overall higher quality cow. Today, we have first lactation heifers starting their lactation exceeding 35 kg a day, and this past year were recognized as the Best Breeder and Exhibitor at the Santa Catarina state show!”
The second farm visited was owned by Orlando Cella and Cledia Nielande. They began farming four years ago and have utilized GMS from the start. Today, they milk 200 cows and represent the highest milk average per cow in their region. “The 75 cows we originally bought when we began farming were a result of GMS matings. The breeder of the cows recommended using GMS, and we soon realized it was something we couldn’t go without,” stated Orlando Cella. ABS would like to thank the Luciano Sarvacinski family and Orlando Cella and Cledia Nielande for being apart of the GMS training school. Headquartered
