SMITH JOINS ABS AS THE BEEF GTS INTERN

DEFOREST, WISCONSIN - June 30, 2003- Chris Smith has joined the ABS Beef Team as the Genetic Type Summary (GTS) Intern for the summer of 2003.

"Chris has an outstanding beef background and has gained vast experience through his work at South Dakota State University," says Todd Sears, Beef Marketing Manager. "This background and knowledge make him a perfect fit for the GTS internship."

Smith is currently a junior at South Dakota State University, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. While on campus, he is actively involved with the Livestock Judging Team, where he was a member of the 3rd High Team Overall at the National Contest during the North American Livestock Exposition. In addition, he has worked as a Student Technology Fellow at the university creating a Livestock Judging Score Tabulator. Along with these campus activities, he is still responsible for sire selection and organizing mating groups on his family’s commercial cow-calf and grain farming operation.

As the Beef GTS Intern, Smith will gather progeny evaluations for the ABS Genetic Type Summary Program. During his internship, he will be scheduling and completing herd visits across the U.S. to evaluate cattle and procure the necessary pedigree information. He will then submit his findings to the ABS Beef Department
